Austal and Gotlandsbolaget have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to develop a construction contract for the ‘Gotland Horizon X’ catamaran concept, first announced in April 2023.

‘Gotland Horizon X’ is a high-speed aluminium catamaran that will utilise gas turbines in a combined cycle to transport up to 1,450 passengers, cargo and vehicles between the Swedish mainland and the island of Gotland.

Under the terms of the MOU and proposed construction contract, the high-speed catamaran will be designed by Austal and constructed at the Austal Philippines shipyard.

Fjord Line’s New Catamaran FSTR Launched

Fjord Line’s brand new high-speed catamaran ferry, FSTR, has been launched from Austal’s shipyard on the Philippines (Balamban, Cebu).

The ship will replace HSC FJORD CAT for the route between Kristiansand and Hirtshals, and will double the capacity of the fastest route between Norway and Denmark.

The fast vehicle-passenger ferry, to be known as FSTR, is the largest aluminium vessel ever launched in the Philippines – and the largest by volume ever constructed by Austal.

The vessel is now in the final stages of fit out, prior to delivery to Fjord Line in Q2.

FSTR (Hull 419) is capable of transporting 1,200 passengers at up to 40 knots and features Austal’s largest ever vehicle-carrying capacity constructed to date, with a beam of 30.5 metres enabling 404 cars to be carried across two decks. The ship features several key design innovations that enhance operating performance and passenger comfort, including a new, optimised hull form that will minimise fuel consumption and wake wash when operating on the Skagerrak Sea between Hirtshals and Kristiansand.

Austal To Build Another High-Speed Catamaran For Molslinjen’s Bornholm Route

A follow-up order to the 109m high-speed catamaran EXPRESS 4, the new Auto Express 115 will be the largest ferry (by volume) ever built by Austal.

Highlights:

  • A new generation of medium speed engines that are LNG compatible, with the potential to upgrade to LNG fuel in the future.
  • 1,610 passengers / 450 cars (or 617 lane metres for trucks + 257 cars) over two vehicle decks.
  • This increases ferry capacity by about 14 %, which solves some of the capacity problems Bornholm has experienced during the recent peak season.
  • Service speed close to 37 knots,
  • Bornholm route, between Ystad and Rønne, from early 2022.

Currently operating on the route are MAX (900 pax and 240 cars) and EXPRESS 1 (1,200 pax and 417 cars).
